Great spot for train enthusiasts! Even those less interested would still be drawn in by the story that the museum (free) tells. The town is a beautiful reminder of the history of this area.
Awesome town! I got a lot of great photos there!
Great place to visit if you want to see the heart and soul of West Virginia.
With information and a souvenir shop on the first level and a museum on the second level, the converted depot (still an Amtrak stop though not a full station) provides an excellent introduction to Thurmond's past and present. The ranger had a detailed knowledge and understanding of the town's history, told his stories in an engaging way, and provided helpful tips about visiting the town and surrounding area. The museum includes several exhibits on railroad operations and the town's social history. If you plan to explore more "ghost towns" in the area, it's useful to check in with the ranger here to find out which ones are accessible during your visit. The visitor center is open from 10 AM to 5 PM daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Beautiful views! Quiet little town
